12 bodies burnt in OAU mortuary fire

TWELVE bodies were burnt in the fire that razed the morgue at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

It was gathered that a power surge about 3am started fire yesterday at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the institution where the bodies were kept.

An informed source disclosed that 12 out of 102 bodies kept in the morgue were affected by the fire.

The source said it took the efforts of security and Fire Services Unit of the university to prevent the fire from spreading to other facilities.

The university will inform those who kept bodies in the morgue about the incident.

Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement, said the Vice Chancellor, Prof.  Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede led principal officers of the institution to the scene of the incident to assess the damage.

Olarewaju, who said the vice chancellor during his visit ordered immediate repairs of the affected areas, said the Vice-Chancellor has also constituted a committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the fire outbreak.
