I’ve Not Dumped PDP, Says Alaibe

Yenagoa – Timi Alaibe, a former presidential adviser on Niger Delta Affairs, has denied reports that he has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for another party after losing at the just-concluded Bayelsa State governorship primary election of the party.

Alaibe, in a statement on Wednesday issued by the administrative secretary of his campaign organisation, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, said he remained “a loyal member of the PDP despite being bombarded by requests and offers of opportunity by other political parties.”

He came second with 365 votes at the primaries which was won by Senator Douye Diri, who scored 561 votes to emerge the party’s governorship candidate.

Alaibe said that he had not taken the decision to defect from the PDP, stressing that “any speculation to the contrary remains what it is – mere speculation.”

The former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) said he was in search of justice to the outcome of the September 3 primary poll “generally seen as a deliberate adulteration of due process in the conduct of the primary election.”

“Conscious of the deadlines provided in both the Electoral Act and the PDP constitution regarding any action deemed necessary on matters of this nature, we have decided that whatever needs to be done must be done fast,” he said.

Alaibe apologised to his supporters and the people for the silence of his political camp which occasioned the speculation in the media that he had jumped ship again.

He explained that the silence was borne out of the need to carry out wide consultations particularly with stakeholders, including youth and women, “before taking any step or embarking on any decision in search of redress or alternatives.”

Alaibe stated that he was almost finalising his consultations, appealing to his supporters to remain calm and peaceful.

The statement added: “A necessary action that will ensure that Bayelsa people have the governor they deserve in the person of Chief Alaibe would be made known within 48 hours.”
